A Comparison of Flagstone Pavers to Other Materials

Introduction to Flagstone Pavers
Flagstone is a type of paver that can be described as a thin flat slab of natural stone that is quarried in different parts of the world. Flagstone pavers have aided the beautification of homes through their unique texture and colors when applied to driveways, patios, walkways and stepping-stones.

Flagstone pavers are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and patterns. Their durability is a key feature making them suitable for any indoor or outdoor applications.

Flagstone Compared to Concrete and Brick Pavers
Other types of pavers such as concrete and clay brick pavers are also used for various paving applications such as patios, pool decks, driveways, sidewalks and gardens. A key difference between such pavers and flagstone pavers is the place of production. Flagstone is produced from natural stone deposits while concrete and clay brick pavers are manufactured at a paver plant.

Homeowners tend to choose flagstone pavers for their home when attempting to create a unique and distinctive look. The elegance and beauty of flagstone pavers is different to that of concrete and brick pavers. However, homeowners will decide on which type of pavers to use depending on the desired look for the pool deck, patio or walkway e.g.

Flagstone pavers create an earthy natural look whilst concrete and brick pavers can be used to depict an ‘old world’, contemporary or modern appearance to different areas of residential homes.

Concrete and clay brick pavers are utilized in both residential and commercial buildings whilst flagstone tends to be used predominantly for residential use.   The reason for this could be due to the the cost involved in choosing the type of pavers.

A Cost Comparison
Flagstone is expensive primarily because of the quarrying involved. The price of flagstone is based on the thickness and size of the pavers and usually costs between $20 and $35 per square foot. Now imagine using flagstone in the construction of a commercial building, the cost would be enormous because of the scale of the project. In other words, flagstone is more suitable for small-scale projects rather than large-scale projects because of the high expense involved.

On the other hand, brick pavers and concrete pavers are suitable for both residential and commercial building use because of their relatively affordable price in comparison to flagstone.

Furthermore, flagstone pavers are more suitable for landscaping applications that do not involve heavy loading. Concrete and brick pavers on the other hand are suitable for such applications. The flexibility, durability and strength of concrete and brick pavers tend to outweigh that of flagstone. Additionally, flagstone is more high maintenance than brick and concrete because of its natural tendency to wear itself out if not maintained properly over a vast period of time.
